Eco-friendly Salons in San Francisco
Natural, organic, non-toxic. These are all words that are popping up a lot in the beauty industry nowadays, and it’s easy to see why: according to Statista, a survey reveals that almost 70 percent of US consumers aged 18 to 29, and 60 percent aged 30 to 59, prefer natural and organic skincare.
We are becoming a lot more aware of what we put onto our skin, thanks to organizations such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and their ‘Skin Deep Database’, which gives an easy to understand rating on how “hazardous” a product or a specific ingredient can be. Some ingredients found in beauty products can be absorbed into the bloodstream, so it makes sense to be more selective. It’s not only for our health but for the planets too.
More and more consumers are looking for ways to reduce their impact on the Earth’s environment, causing a growing demand for ‘green’ salons. Fortunately, the owners are listening. Below are a handful in the San Francisco area:
Edo Salon
Even before you step into this salon, you will fall in love with it. The decor, inside and out, will make you feel a sense of calm and peace. Located in the hip, lower Haight district for more than 20 years, try this loft-style salon whether you’re looking for a modern haircut or a 90’s shag, you will not be disappointed. On the way out, treat yourself to a new shampoo or styling wax from one of the many different brands of gorgeous, organic products they have for sale.
Embody Zen
What could be better than heading for a day at the Spa, knowing that your beauty treatments will be carried out using the best, eco-friendly, organic ingredients? At Embody Zen the botanical facials include an enzyme peel and acupressure therapy, which sounds like heaven. Not forgetting their chosen method of depilation – sugaring, which is a very gentle and natural form of hair removal.
An added bonus is that a portion of the profit of your relaxing facial or body treatment will go towards a very good cause. Friends of the Urban Forest is a non-profit organization, committed to keeping San Francisco’s “streets green and air clean”, and a donation will be made when you book any treatment at Embody Zen.
Ingenious Organic Concept Salon
Ingenious Salon offers hair styling, conditioning treatments and coloring using ‘Oway’ color which are all made with organic and fair trade ingredients. If you’re looking for a way to disguise a thinning hairline or maybe cover up a scar, their scalp micropigmentation could be for you, using organic pigments of course. Another treatment you might be tempted by is Celluma pro, a safe and non-invasive LED light therapy treatment that helps to reduce signs of ageing and acne, it can even relieve muscle and joint pain.
The Plum Organic Beauty
Plum is not new to the ever growing eco-salon scene, it’s a well established gem in the Bay area. The salon has a cozy, natural vibe where you can get all hair services, including an ‘eco keratin smoothing treatment’ to tame your mane without the addition of harmful ingredients such as formaldehyde, which can often be found in the products used for this service.
Earthbody
Earthbody is the epitome of a green salon. Everything they do has the environment in mind, even down to the candles that they burn during the treatments (soy wax, by the way). Their promise of no petroleum bases, parabens or paraffin-filled candles, along with their zero waste practices, makes them an eco-warrior’s dream salon. There are plenty of treatments on offer here from acne treatments and body scrubs, to massages with cannabis infused oils to rid you of your aches and pains.
So next time you’re in San Francisco (or perhaps you are lucky enough to live there), make sure to get yourself an appointment in one of these stunning, eco-conscious salons. Go on, you deserve it, and so does our planet!
